While growing up, my dad, a rose grower, earned $100 per week.
This kept Mom, Dad and me with clothing, food, and shelter, but not much more.
My best friend’s dad earned much more and carried around thousands of dollars in his pocket. His opulent lifestyle included season tickets to the Buffalo Bills and a brand-new Oldsmobile every other year.
He even got three months in Florida every winter, escaping the dreaded WNYW (Western New York Winters).
He was my role model.
But was that the right one for me?
Who do you look up to? How do you know this is the right one to follow? What if you’re following the wrong one? What price might you pay?
The answer can be found in Mark’s Gospel today, where Jesus tells that young man:
Give up your wealth and follow me.
As
for me, money was my god for many years—until a memorable day in March 1995,
when a new role model gave me a cassette tape that changed my life. His advice
was simple and easy to follow:
- Read the Bible every day
- Go to church every Sunday
- Join a Bible study group
I took the advice and did just that. I began to grow more reliant on God and less on material things. I found my peace in Him, not in my bank statement.
Might you consider spending a little more time with God—with Jesus as your role model—and less time pursuing material things?
The young man in the story chose the things of the world. And you?
