Swallowing the Frog

Standing in front of eight kids in religious ed class, I was shaking like the proverbial leaf.

It was my first time to teach these juniors alone, without Miss Debra the seasoned veteran. Up till that point she had taught, and I’d been the color commentator, adding a little insight to the message.

This would be a huge step out of my comfort zone.

Whether it’s public speaking, learning something new, or joining a new group all by yourself, when you’re stepping out of your comfort zone and into your challenge zone I know you know that gut-wrenching feeling.

Standing in front of these kids, it was time to open my mouth and share the Good News. 

In moments like these, I remind myself that:

If you must swallow a frog, you don’t want to look at it very long.

Fortunately, I’d done my homework the night before, and my first solo went very well. I was able to keep these youngsters engaged for the hour-long class. 

(Thank you, Jesus!)

Driving home afterwards, a sense of peace and satisfaction flowed through my mind and body.  

Might you ask God how you can better serve him? 

And yes, it will mean leaving your comfort zone—but the fulfillment you’ll receive once you’ve done it will be your reward.

Don’t stare at the frog. Just swallow and get to all those benefits God has waiting for you when you step into your challenge zone.

1 Corinthians 15:58 Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the LORD, because you know that your labor in the LORD is not in vain.
