Now, Danny Copeland had the athletic chops to play college and even professional sports. He was always our starting center. But playing high school basketball was my passion. Could this be my day to shine? The ref threw the ball up for the tip-off, signaling the start of my time in the limelight. Look out NBA, here I come. The opposing center easily out-jumped me and the other team scored first. In the ensuing minutes, I was called for a three-second violation and a personal foul. And I missed an easy layup. If Coach Haywood had been a foghorn on a pea-soup day, he couldn’t have sounded more dismal to my ears. “Hansen, that’s all! Copeland, you’re in.” I’d failed to please myself, my team mates, and the fans. That was to be my last foray into high school basketball.
