| In high school I was decent on a trombone—playing solos at concerts, and even being selected to play in all-county orchestras. The other kids called me Honker. First thing in the morning, as the roosters crowed in our country town south of Buffalo, NY, Coach Haywood tutored me. My basketball coach, who was also our band instructor, taught me to understand chords, harmony and improvisation. My dream? To become a world-famous trombonist. Some 3,000 years ago, King David had a dream to build a temple in Jerusalem. 2 Samuel 7:13: He is the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. A worthy dream, to be sure. But God told him Not gonna happen! That’ll be your son Solomon’s job. Despite this door slamming on his dream, David went on to be the greatest-ever king of Israel. In my junior year of high school, my mom set me straight: “Not gonna happen!” My dreams of standing up on stage with the big bands, and maybe even with the smash-hit group Chicago, went up in smoke. I was crushed. But, like King David, God had other plans for me. He may have even been whispering some of those unemployed trombonist jokes in my mom’s ear: How do you know when there’s a trombonist at your door? His hat says “Domino’s Pizza.” Off to Cornell I went, not on a cherished music scholarship but for a more boring-sounding one: Hotel Administration. So far, I’d say that’s worked out quite well.
