| I was being interviewed. Putting me even more on the spot, I was being filmed. This took place in our home in Weston recently with a former student. One of her interview questions intrigued me deeply—and rattled me at the same time. “Bill, if they were to make a movie about your life, what would it be about, and who would star in it?” I was totally unprepared. Couldn’t look at the cheat sheet scribbled on my cuff; couldn’t even hark back to a favorite quote or colorful anecdote from my life. I tried to answer her anyway, stumbling through this potentially illuminating question with some oblique response. However, I did manage to answer the “Who would star in your movie?” part. For those of you who know me, you already know I like to have fun while getting things done. I take what I do seriously—but I don’t take myself too seriously. My knee-jerk answer during the interview was to name a famous guy called Bill. Same first name as me, and a funny guy. But then, as I wrote this message for you, the Lord came in and lit my path. Psalm 119:105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. The spirit of God nudged me to do a little homework. I read up and discovered this other Bill’s an atheist. Living my life deep in faith as I do every day, it just wouldn’t be right to cast an atheist in the Movie of Me. (At least he’s a funny atheist. Famous comedian by the name of Bill Murray.) My divinely-inspired research then led me to a more ideal choice: Christian comedian Frank Skinner. Frank once said of Christians, “I like the idea that we’re funnier than the atheists.” Gotta love it! So, back to that interview question. I finally got my act together and can answer the other part of the question—if you’ll pardon the pun. My movie would focus on my struggles with a variety of sins and self-imposed folly. You’d cringe in parts, watching me make mistakes, barge down the wrong paths or try to force things to happen. You’d feel tired in parts, watching me work like a maniac and toss around in bed at night like an insomniac. You’d have some heart-warming or thrilling moments, watching the wins and highlights of my life. You’d grin (or groan) watching me get some wake-up calls. Sometimes the same ones that had to be repeated. With all the ups and downs, you’d be in suspense until the third act. . . . But, in the end, Bill Hansen as played by Frank Skinner turns out pretty good. Maybe the screenwriters would put this somewhere else, but my tombstone in the final scene—no weeping, only applause and smiles, please—would read, in carved letters using a biblical font: “He Loved God and He Loved Others.” And you?
