You might have seen this somewhere. Maybe even lots of time. Martin Luther said it. “I have lots to do today, so I need to spend more time alone with God.” Sounds counterintuitive, I know. You’ve got a MEGA busy day ahead so you . . . . . . stop to contemplate, instead of getting on with it? Hmmmm. Martin Luther was a German professor back a while ago. He was into theology and composing. He was a priest and a monk—not to mention all that reformation stuff that made history. Martin was ordained to the priesthood in 1507. Wait. 1507? But that was over 500 years ago! Yeah. Back when there was no social media. No cell phones. No addictive TV series that ramp up the drama on you every week so you’ll keep watching. And no socially-ordained workaholism in a frenzied world. It was probably easy for him, right? Monks are supposed to be alone and contemplate. What did Martin Luther know about grabbing time alone with God in this crazy world we live in today? I’m here to blow that one out of the water. I want to show you what God (and Martin) taught me—that it’s doable, no matter how “busy” we are. Like you, my life’s far from perfect. I have my challenges and issues every single day. You can imagine what comes up just in my work day alone, what with 200+ team members and thousands of clients. Living in my 73-year-old body has its challenges too. My mind has not even come close to reaching that age, but sometimes my body’s not in sync with my mind. (Know the feeling?) Each morning after filling my coffee cup, I sit in my large easy chair in the corner of my office and spend time alone with the Lord. Reading Scripture. Praying. Meditating. Except for the occasional sound of sipping, you could hear a pin drop. It’s so quiet I can hear God’s voice as He whispers to me. With pen and pad always at the ready, I take notes. Some days even filling a full page. The Lord whispers to me about family, friends, my health, even my team members at work. As the sun rises on a brand-new day, this time alone with Him gets me ready to face the world outside. To me, it’s priceless. Enough about me, how about you? Do you carve out time alone with God each day? Yes? No? Maybe? If you’re feeling guilty right now, that’s not the point. The point is, God recognizes when you try, and He know that emergencies pop up. He knows your heart better than you do. And He wants you to keep trying. Remember, even a couple of minutes are better than nothing. Keep growing your time alone with Him. And, yes, you’re right. Some days it’s easier than others. But oh, so very worth it.
