| “West Maui’s Road to Hana.” That’s what some call it. The north shore of West Maui—if you’ve ever been to Maui, you know exactly what I’m sayin’. The fine print said our rental car contract would be voided if we took that road. It even makes the road to Hana look like a cakewalk. This was the late 1990s. We were younger, oh so much younger than before. . . . With our adventuresome spirit in full roar, we left Kapalua and headed for Kahului. The drive started out quite scenic, with plenty of room between us and the 1,000-foot drop from the cliff’s edge. But there were no guardrails on this one-lane dirt road. Halfway into our adventure we were ready to turn around. We’d had enough. But there was no room to turn around. About that time another vehicle approached! We tried not to focus on the perilous drop to the crashing waves below. What could we/should we do? Have you ever been on one of these “contract voided” roads—maybe not in Maui, but on your life’s journey—where you knew even one tiny mistake would cost you dearly—maybe even permanently? There we were, perched on a cliff, nervous as two cats on some bad catnip, trying not to focus on what was below. We tried to keep our minds on our options. Hmm. We could drive the car in reverse roughly ten miles. Or we could tell the driver of the other car to do the same. NO WAY!!! What could we/should we do? A light bulb went on above our heads. Slowly, inchingly, I was able to pull our vehicle off the road onto a 30-degree hillside, with the rental car tilted precariously towards the waves below. The other vehicle drove past us in Tortoise gear. Whew! Thank you, Jesus. Psalm 30, Verses 2 and 3: LORD my God, I called to you for help, and you healed me. You, LORD, brought me up from the realm of the dead; you spared me from going down to the pit. This was harder for us than it was for God. The only obstacle God usually has is us, what with our human folly of blocking Him or trying to control things instead of letting go and letting God flow. Next time you’re perched on a cliff and teetering at a 30-degree angle, be smart and let God take the wheel. P.S. For your next Hawaii adventure . . . unless you truly and deeply enjoy being scared out of your mind, go from Kapalua to Kahului the long way. Enough said. |
