It was party time at the old Jackie Gleason Theater. Now The Fillmore.
Major hospital donors and doctors gathered to celebrate.
They were there to honor the completion of their new surgical tower, rising high on the Miami Beach skyline.
600 of South Florida’s movers and shakers showed up in their finery to enjoy an evening of food and service—lovingly provided by my catering team—and to bask in the fame of the headlining acts.
They were treated to performances by Kenny Loggins and Chicago.
Because we’ve supported the hospital for 10 years and counting, we were not just the caterers but also invited guests. Seated somewhere between the performers on the glorified stage and that other, less famous one—the catering staging area—I kept an eye on my team while reveling in the music and song.
Seated at round tables down by the stage itself were the biggest donors. Miami locals would recognize their names from their community service, their businesses, and their wealth.
What blew me away was when these conservative, button-downed donors leaped out of their seats and became the life and soul of the party.
And what got them to shed their more formal selves?
Kenny Loggins upping the tempo with songs such as Footloose and Danger Zone!
They were dancing like Sunday would never come.
David’s Psalm 40, Verse 8:
“I take joy in doing your will, Lord.”
Back at that lesser-known stage.
What about us trying to be guests at our own catered event? This is always nerve-wracking. We have 110% confidence in our management team and their ability to perform under pressure. . . .
Still, it’s never over till it’s over.
You know what I mean?
By the time the second act, Chicago, hit the stage we knew we’d nailed it. Nary a complaint, plenty of food, and our smiling service team had delighted the guests.
We left with joy in our hearts, knowing we did the Lord’s will.
BUT.
Life being what it is, not every act of service is set to the tune of wealth and famous singers. Have you ever served begrudgingly? Are there times you wished you could go back and serve with a more cheerful heart?
When we’ve done His will—when we’ve shared our time, talent or treasure—God wants us to sing and dance with joy, no matter where, what or who we served.

C’mon, put on a happy song, belt out the lyrics and get your feet moving! You’ll soon be in the right mood to lift your heart to Him.
