| Charles Thomas Studd was an Englishman who inherited a vast sum of money. C.T., as he was known, was also an outstanding cricket player. In 1882, he was part of the English team that clashed with Australia—a legendary sporting match that generated the test cricket series known as The Ashes. C.T. Studd was one of the righteous commemorated in Psalm 1: Like a tree planted by a stream, his harvest was plentiful, and whatever he did flourished. Life was good for young Charles. He had it all, as they say. This speaks of today’s parable from Jesus, Luke 16: Verses 19 and 20: 19“There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. 20At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores 21and longing to eat what fell from the rich man’s table.” In 1884, Studd retired from two cricket clubs with romantic-sounding English names: Marylebone and Middlesex. So, what did the illustrious C.T. do next? With a man like this, there’s no resting on laurels. Serving as a missionary in China and Africa, Studd invested a sizeable chunk of his time, energy and fortune in the lives of others. You may have already been touched by the quote he’s famous for: “Only one life ‘twill soon be past, only what’s done for Christ will last.” Studd did just that! He lived the rest of his life in service to God. But being a rich guy is not the only means to a habit of glorifying God. With bank account both big or small, anyone can do it. And there’s no time like the present. Let’s pause for a moment together. Close your eyes, smile and breathe. As you do so, ponder this enriching question: Using my time, treasure and talent, what can I be doing for the rest of this blessed week to glorify God? |
