It was 1978—but I see it in my head like it happened yesterday. With the Kentucky Derby only weeks away (Saturday, May 4, 2019), I can’t help but replay it in my mind. Three duels between two of the greatest horses of all time: Affirmed and Alydar. Spanning a five-week stretch, and in a giant test of nerves for those waiting on the outcome, these two thoroughbreds raced for nearly four miles over three race tracks. Only one horse could be the victor. Ultimately, Affirmed was awarded the Triple Crown. Affirmed and jockey Steve Cauthen set multiple records—including shortest and longest gaps between previous and next Triple Crown winners, and first jockey to win over $6 million in a year. Not only that but also youngest jockey to win the Triple Crown. This magnificent horse later retired to Kentucky, after being inducted into the National Racing Museum Hall of Fame. What made this team of two so special? Solomon, Proverbs 1:5 Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance. Cauthen watched his horse’s ears. Whenever they perked up, that meant a hot contender was closing in. But Affirmed could be even more precise. Depending upon which side the challenger was gaining on, that ear would perk up more—urging Cauthen to put his horse into overdrive in a favorable direction. What can we two-leggeds learn from this? During a close race, a good horse and jockey are a team, functioning as one seamless unit. Like a Divine jockey who wants us to win the race, God is always watching for that ear to perk up, signaling that we’re paying close attention. As the world tries to overtake you, be sure point that ear in the right direction and let God know you’re receptive to His loving guidance. Working with God as one seamless unit will always make you the winner. |
