Roll back to the early 1990s. I was going to church most Sundays, yet still questioning and nit-picking.
How does He
. . . know every hair on our heads?
How does He
. . . know every thought that we think?
How can He
. . . love us in this often ugly, messy, sometimes mean and nasty world?
I was going through the motions. Wanting to see and be seen at church. Yet still not putting God in control of my life.
Back then, I even thought Christianity was a crutch for those who couldn’t pull themselves up by their own bootstraps.
My questions were so literal. I thought of God in human terms.
Have you ever doubted the love of God? Do you have more faith in the power of “getting on with it” than in the power of God? Ever doubted the veracity of the Bible?
Are you still on the borderline of belief and unbelief?
In March 1995, thanks to a small object no bigger than a cell phone, my life changed radically.
The Gospel of John, 8:31-32:
Then Jesus said to the
Jews who had believed in him,
“If you continue in my word,
you are truly my disciples;
and you will know the truth,
and the truth will make you free.”
That small object was a cassette tape; a gift from author and motivational speaker Zig Ziglar, someone I greatly admired.
That little gift was the truth that set me free from my faulty internal system. It opened my eyes to the power of God.
But, yes, it was unsettling for a time—moving from my comfort zone into letting God be in control. This took some getting used to.
President Garfield nailed it when he said, “The truth will set you free, but at first it will make you miserable.”
It takes time to get used to reading God’s Word every day, sincerely worshiping Him at services and praying/meditating on His Word.
As for veracity? Zig reminds us that if God can build the world, He can certainly get a book right!
I have free will. For a while I used it to be a Country Club Christian.
Then I discovered a much better use for it.
Free will is what you make of it.
Using it to purposely put God at the center of your heart guarantees that His truth WILL set you free.
