| He was too young to die. Gone at the age of 59, leaving my mom and me behind. Medical advances since that sorrowful day—May 1, 1968—would have cured my dad’s hardened arteries and heart. This knowledge is still tough for me. Although his physical heart had hardened, his spiritual heart was soft as butter. He loved his fellow man and served others with his heart of gold. What would Jesus do? That’s what my dad did. You more than likely have someone in your life like my dad, or perhaps YOU are like my dad. Loving, caring, putting others first—right after God. With my dad gone I had every reason to nurse a hardened heart. And I did, for years. But what good does this do us? God made it clear to the Israelites that hardened hearts would not get them into the Promised Land. For 40 years he kept them in the desert, suffering in the heat and, at times, even starvation. From Psalm 95: “Do not harden your hearts as you did at Meribah,[a] as you did that day at Massah[b] in the wilderness, 9where your ancestors tested me; they tried me, though they had seen what I did. Fortunately, over the years my heart has softened to some degree—but I still have a long way to go. Sure, cholesterol medicine can soften our physical arteries. But only God can soften our spiritual arteries. If you’re anything like me, a good daily dose of God’s medicine will slowly help each of us become more like Jesus—and more like my dad. |
