Cape Cod in the summer of ’67. Sun, surf and sand.
Susan and I were dating, taking long walks on the beach, enjoying beach bonfires in the wee hours with fellow workers from the restaurant.
At summer’s end, we parted. She returned to her home near Boston, and me to my home near Buffalo.
The distance didn’t dampen our relationship—at least, not from my point of view.
Wisely, Susan knew it was time to get on with her life. “It was fun while it lasted.”
But I didn’t want it to end.
Early that fall, I sat around moping and feeling sorry for myself. Susan wouldn’t answer my calls.
Soon I’d be enlisting in Officer Candidate School in Newport. In the meantime, I decided I’d take matters into my own hands. I’d drive all the way from Buffalo to Boston to see her.
That was my plan.

The fog was dense on the NY State Thruway but that didn’t stop me. Driving all night through the fog and over many miles, all I could think of was seeing my summer love.
I pulled into her driveway and knocked on the door.
The greeting from Susan was cold as ice.

but the rebellious stumble in them.
For me it was more like a dagger to the heart than stumbling, but you get the picture.
When it’s not right, it’s not right.
When we’re feeling down and out, rejected and hurt, succumbing to the Lord’s will can give us peace and true understanding.
Allowing God’s will to permeate you with peace will keep you from doing it the hard way: working your way through dense fog to prove Him wrong.
It didn’t work for me, nor will it work for you in the long run.
