Shaving Nanoseconds off a Precious Moment

“Bill, you’ve got the attention span of a gnat!”

These were the words of a colleague.

Okay. Just so you know. This is true about me.

Particularly when engaged in producing a wedding or event.

Food preparation, design and décor, service, entertainment . . . this is the life of a caterer/event producer.

Details are what separates success from failure. When we focus on one detail for too long—rather than all the details—that’s when the wheels come off.

I like to manage by walking around, looking for trouble (or even trouble in the making), and then fixing it. All without the client knowing.

Never let them see you sweat!

In the catering world, patience is not a virtue.

Would you try this?

“I’m sorry, Mrs. Party Host. The chef was late to work, the truck broke down on the way to your house, and three of my servers were out late last night and forgot to come in. Just be patient. We’ll have your (hopefully still hot) dinner served as soon as we can.  Here, have another drink!”

Are you like Mrs. Party Host? Tapping your foot for things to unfold in your time frame? Are you always in a hurry to finish your to-do list?

Do you even weave in and out of traffic, all to save nanoseconds? All to get to where you’re going even faster?

That’s me—but hopefully not you. I’ve yet to learn.

I may buzz around like a gnat, but I’ve learned this much:

Before I race off to my desk, my office, or back home, I always start my day by spending quiet, unhurried time with the Lord.

  David, Psalm 27:14.

Wait for the LORD;
be strong
and take heart
and wait
for the LORD.

Slow down, listen for God’s voice, and savor the moments.

Savor the little things as God leads you down HIS path.

And, hey. Next time you go out for dinner. . . .

Why not get so engrossed in savoring your time on this planet—and your connection to the Lord—you even forget to look up every other minute.

“Where’s that server with my meal?”

(Maybe he was out late last night too!)
